How to Break the Sugar Addiction

In the Greek version of the Book of Daniel there is a 14th chapter entitled, “Bel and the Dragon.” Daniel uncovers the Babylonian priests are taking the food offered to the idol, Bel, and eating it along with their families. Abusing food like overindulging in sugar products is essentially eating the devil’s food. When we desire food more than God it turns food into an idol.

Being addicted to sugar is one of Satan’s tools. It does matter what you eat. Our bodies are God’s living temple. Would you go into a church and destroy the altar or any other sacred item? No, so why do this to your body. It’s essentially the same thing. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (WEB) states, “don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. Leviticus 19:2 (WEB) tells us, you shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy.” The word “holy” isn’t about having good morals and values but being like Jesus. Act and react to situations like Jesus did. Follow His example in everything you do.

The more you learn about God and spend time in prayer the more you will want to avoid sin. When you are tempted the most powerful weapon you can use is the name of Jesus and His word.

White sugar is poison to your body. If you show obedience to God by using self-control you will be blessed. If you abuse sugar, it will only lead to health problems and zap your energy. Staying off sugar for two weeks will help eliminate the cravings for sugar. You will start desiring good food, such as, fruit and vegetables. The hard thing about sin is it temporarily feels good but afterwards it all changes and eventually leads to death. You don’t need to turn to sugar when you need comfort. Turn to your heavenly Father instead and find love, acceptance, and compassion.

Ask God to take away your desire for sugar, tobacco, alcohol or any other idol in your life that has control over you. God can and will help you if you let Him. Draw close to God and He will draw close to you. Every time you abuse sugar and make it an idol you are rejecting God and choosing Satan. Good versus evil. Life versus death. It’s a wakeup call when you start to view food or any other bad habit in your live from this perspective. Every time you are tempted repeat to yourself Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” You might have a weakness in this area but watch God display His strength in you when you turn the situation over to Him.

Spiritual warfare is real, so you have to fight but you also have the God of the universe to help you. Trust Him and turn to Him for strength, wisdom, and self-control. Write out a battle plan to help you beat the idols in your life. God provides us with the armor necessary to win the battle. They include the following 7 items:

  • The Belt of Truth
  • The Breastplate of Righteousness
  • The Shoes of the Good News of Peace
  • The Shield of Faith
  • The Helmet of Salvation
  • The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God
  • Prayer

God tells us the same power that raised Jesus from the grave lives in us so use that power and have victory. What would you like to accomplish by living in the power of the Holy Spirit?
